Work Skills Program

Developing work skills is essential for academic achievement and independence. It is an important predictor of success in adulthood. This service will help children develop the basic skills needed to learn. The sessions will focus on getting the child to learn skills such as to

  • sit down
  • give attention to the task
  • initiate tasks
  • refocus after distractions
  • work independently
  • request help
  • understand "wait"
  • use trial and error
  • self correct
  • understand and indicate "finished"
  • understand a work/reward routine

Depending on the skill being taught, various teaching methods such as discrete trial, incidental teaching, and structured teaching will be used to help the child learn and succeed. Parent participation is necessary for the child to generalize the skills learned to the home and school. Emphasis will be placed on making skills functional for the home setting and a home routines homework sheet will be used each session. Each session will occur at the center and last 60 minutes. The number of sessions may range from 4 to 10.
