Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is autism, Asperger's, or PDD-NOS?

A: The Autism Society of America has several resources that answer this question. Also, Autism Spectrum Disorders: Primer for Parents and Educators (Adobe PDF) can be downloaded and shared with your child's teacher.

Q: How do I enter into the STAR program?

A: To begin the process to receive STAR services:

  1. Your child must have an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis (e.g., autism, Asperger's, PDD NOS) given by a licensed professional (e.g., psychologist, psychiatrist, pediatrician).
  2. The child's legal guardian must contact STAR at (502) 852-3797 to do a brief intake. At that time, the STAR program and process will be explained. The caller will be asked at that time to obtain a referral from a medical doctor (e.g., pediatrician, psychiatrist, family physician) for STAR services.
  3. After the caller has finished the intake process, a Weisskopf Child Evaluation Center application packet and a STAR packet will be mailed for the guardian(s) to complete. The process to receive STAR services begins when STAR receives all completed packet materials.

Q: "How much will this service cost?"

A: For a fee quote, please contact the Weisskopf Child Evaluation Center (WCEC) Finance Department at (502) 852-5331, then asked to be connected to the Finance Department.

Q: "Will my insurance cover this service?"

A: All STAR assessments, evaluations, and interventions are pre-authorized by the WCEC Finance Department prior to scheduling the service. Once a caregiver has confirmed he or she is interested in receiving STAR services, the Finance Department is asked to pre-authorize the confirmed STAR service with the child's insurance carrier. The Finance Department will then notify the caregiver as to how much the insurance will or will not pay for that specific service. Once the caregiver knows how much he or she will financially be responsible for payment of that service, the caregiver is asked if he or she would like to schedule the service. If the caregiver accepts and wants to proceed, the WCEC Scheduling Department is asked to contact the caregiver to schedule the STAR service.

Caregivers may also ask the WCEC Finance Department about payment plans.
